We are very proud to continue to showcase the range of fish foster carers and recipients of donated aquariums, fish and/or funds.
The North Buderim Childcare Centre is yet another organisation which has contributed significantly to its local community.
The centre's 6 foot fish tank was in dire need of a makeover (having not been effectively maintained in over 3 years) with all of the rocks, wood and ornaments, and much of its glass, covered in algae.
Parent and aquarium hobbyist, John Fleay, was assigned the huge task of bringing the tank back to life during the centre's working bee. John spent 5-6 hours on a Saturday thoroughly cleaning the tank and even replacing the heater and airpump at his own expense.
Furthermore, John took it upon himself to source a much more efficient filtration system to replace the aquarium's struggling under-gravel filter and small powerhead. John later even built a sturdy wooden filter cover to keep inquisitive hands safe and sound.
John put the word out on the Queensland Aquarium Forum( www.qldaf.com )and was inundated with offers of assistance including fish, discounted filters and monetary donations from many of the forum members.
Special mention goes to forum members 'Rabbit' who supplied an inexpensive canister filter and also drove half way to Maroochydore from Brisbane to meet John. Forum member 'Fatboy101' supplied numerous fish at a very, very low price and member 'Tech Den' pledged to supply a few bristlenose catfish to help keep the algae at bay. Member 'Toushae' also offered John a cannister filter at a great price. We at Guppy Guru were also very honoured to assist by providing a small monetary contribution towards the filter purchase.
John says that, "The tank now looks great and will only get better....The kids love it. One of the biggest jobs now is cleaning all the small handprints off the glass front."
Young Erin admires the tremendous efforts of her father, John Fleay.
